Captain’s Blog - Stardate 60325.6

This is the “two steps forward, one step back” blog that, no doubt, accompanies life (re: meal) changes. I am prefacing this by acknowledging that I missed two days of my prilosec, an antacid of sorts that is designed to reduce acid reflux. It was not intentional, but I realized this morning I have not taken it in two days. That has been corrected.

Why is that important? Well, here’s the neat part. The acid escapes to the esophagus through what I believe to be my hiatal hernia (where the sphincter to the stomach doesn’t close all the way). This causes symptoms that can mimic simple heartburn or have additional “referred” symptoms throughout the upper body.

Heartburn can be a little scary. Especially when you’re prone to hypochondria. And oddly, the more I think about it, the worse it can feel. I’ve read blogs, done some homework, and it is this feeling that primarily lead me to do this Whole30 in the first place.

I had a professor in college, Dr. John Ficca, who once said “Getting old is not for the weak.” Then he “harumph-ed” and walked away as he often would. And though I’m only in my thirties, I can see how the body can definitely be a force to be reckoned with. I must remind myself that every new twinge or spot is not a danger to my overall well-being and that a well-tempered awareness is best in preventative medicine.

Oh…and breathe.

SNBWhole30 - Day Six: Last night’s dinner was also really good. We had a spice and walnut rubbed pork tenderloin with steamed asparagus and a balsamic vinaigrette with a side of Cauliflower mash. Not gonna lie, though. I want cake REALLY bad. My lunch was better, and I made sure to have left overs for today. We’re having leftovers for dinner tonight for the first time. Also, regarding the recipes. They are harder to find online and without copying them verbatim here, it might be better to skip that part. If you see something you’d like, let me know and I can send it your way.
