Yesterday, if you follow astrology, you already know that Mercury went into retrograde. For those of you not into astrology, here's what that means.
This happens three to four times per year, when the planet Mercury slows down, and appears to stop (station) and move backwards (retrograde). It's an optical illusion, since there is forward movement, like speeding by a slow-moving train -- as it recedes, it appears to go backward.
As with everything in astrology this has several meanings. On one hand, this can be a good time for one to self-reflect and prepare to move down a new path. That sounds great. But there are also some negative effects during this time. And while I don't make decisions based on horoscopes or let astrology dictate my behavior...I think it's interesting that the areas of the day-to-day that are supposed to be affected do tend to get more difficult during this time. Mercury in retrograde is said to wreak havoc on the following areas of life.
Well, already I've been having problems with most of my devices. Whether my startup disk is almost full on my MacBook Pro, or the internet won't connect at work, there have already been several technical difficulties this week.
Today, for example, I tried uploading a photo to Facebook for one of my design clients. It took me six attempts. I kept getting the message that "You can only load .jpg or .png files less than 4MB." Well, the file was a .jpg that was 1.5MB, so there was no legitimate reason this should have been a problem. After four attempts to upload the .jpg, I reformatted it to a .png, reduced the pixels size, and refreshed the browser. It worked. I then proceeded to have several problems printing the documents I needed at work.
This has been a terrible week for communication. "But Mercury only went into retrograde yesterday? How could it effect the whole week?" Well, unfortunately the time before entering retrograde and the time after leaving it also tend to be effected.
Take for example, my boyfriend's work phone. Leaving the country for a few days for a work event, this and Facebook was the only way he and I would be able to communicate while he was out of town. The work phone was his only device that was equipped for international communication and it pretty much was on the fritz the minute he landed. We communicated via Facebook message when we could but it was pretty frustrating.
Well, this one is odd. Usually I am the guy who gets to the bus stop or train station within seconds of the vehicle in question pulling away. So today, I walked out the door and the bus was right on time. Same with the train. However, I managed to lose my Ventra card after our trip last week. I have had to buy day passes all week long and I am still waiting for my new card in the mail.
On Monday it was 80 degrees. Tuesday it was 40 degrees. Not to mention the terrible weather on the national news.
So...maybe I see these trends because I want to. I am totally open to that. Nevertheless, every time mercury goes into retrograde these kinds of things seem to happen. A lot. So, until Mercury leaves retrograde May 21st, look around. See if you notice challenges in technology, communication, travel and weather. Maybe you'll see it too.
