Today is my birthday! I'm usually more excited about having a day or near-day specific celebration of me, but this year is different. This year, I'm much more interested in taking stock of the varied and wonderful loves in my life.
First, probably the best thing to come out of social media, there is the Facebook love. People near and far, both emotionally and physically, take a second to think of you and say "Happy Birthday." Some say it with pictures or videos, but no matter how it's said, it's a day most avid or even casual Facebookers look forward to.
Then there are close friends, who text and call. Some who call from overseas as they start a brand new and exciting journey. Some who've done the math and realize that this is the twenty-fifth "Happy Birthday" we've exchanged. Some I only hear from on my birthday but always bring a smile to my face.
I remember lost love that still brings me happiness and strength. My beautiful cat who, every now and then, I still hear running up to greet me when I get home. My grandparents, aunt, and friends who are no longer with us in body but I carry with me always.
Of course, there's my family, both immediate and extended. A mother and father who have done more than I can quantify in any blog to bless me with an amazing life. Cousins who always remember to send their love. And also my boyfriend's family who have embraced and included me, including a four year old who calls me "Uncle Shaun" who I look forward to meeting princesses with at Disney later this month.
Speaking of my boyfriend, in addition to him being wonderful all the time, he continues to make this "birthday month" so special for me. Gifts, calls, but most importantly his unwavering love and support.
All in all, I have to say that the gifts I have in my life are beyond plentiful. That's the best birthday gift of all.
